Mount Pleasant Middle School
Mount Pleasant, North Carolina
This new 156,000 square foot replacement middle school project is located immediately adjacent to the Mt. Pleasant High School campus in Mt. Pleasant, NC. The building is designed to accommodate 722 students with a core capacity of 858 students.
The design includes a two-story classroom wing at the end of a large Lobby/Commons space, Media Center, Auditorium, Gymnasium, Auxiliary Gym and Cafeteria. Offices are located along the Lobby Commons, allowing secure after school access to these spaces without compromising the security of the Classroom wing. Unique educational features include Group Instruction Space for each grade level with flexible break-out collaboration space. Exterior courtyards are designed to foster outdoor learning activities and an expanded Agriculture curriculum. The Digital Lab serves as an incubator for design and collaboration of students and faculty.
Environmentally-sensitive design features are incorporated throughout the building. The two-story classroom wing is oriented to optimize solar orientation while exterior sunshades on the south facades reduce heat gain while providing views and natural daylighting into the building. Occupancy sensors, dimming controls and electrical outlets on timers reduce overall electrical consumption. LED lighting is incorporated throughout the building and site. Highly-efficient mechanical units are set inside for ease of maintenance and long-term durability. A 60,000-gallon rainwater collection system reuses rainfall for irrigating the softball, baseball and football fields.
